The term invisible zipper was coined by Edith Schonberg in 1930 and is trademarked as InvisZip. The term "hidden" or "secret" zipper has also been used.
Invisible zippers are typically made of nylon, but can be made from other materials such as polyester and polypropylene. They consist of two parts: a slider that runs along the length of the fabric and a toothless end on each side. When the slider is placed at one end of the fabric, it locks into place to keep the fabric open. To close the garment, the slider is moved to the opposite end of the fabric and locked into place.
There are several advantages to using an invisible zipper over a traditional metal hook-and-eye closure. Invisible zippers do not require any hooks or eyes to be sewn onto the fabric, making them easier to install and remove. They are less likely to come undone during wear and tear than traditional closures. Additionally, they can be lined with interfacing material to create a smoother finish on the outside of the garment.
