The English name of the material that the metal nylon zipper is made from: Nylon. Nylon is an artificial polymer, which means it's man-made. It was invented in 1935 by Wallace Carothers at DuPont and has been used for many different things since then. In addition to being used to make zippers, nylon is also used to make clothing (hosiery), ropes, sails, outdoor gear, and other items. The most common type of nylon fabric you'll see today is called "polyamide".
